Azure AD Health Service Agents Registry Keys Access

#

Source
github.com/SigmaHQ/sigma

This detection uses Windows security events to detect suspicious access attempts to the registry key values and sub-keys of Azure AD Health service agents (e.g AD FS). Information from AD Health service agents can be used to potentially abuse some of the features provided by those services in the cloud (e.g. Federation). This detection requires an access control entry (ACE) on the system access control list (SACL) of the following securable object: HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ADHealthAgent. Make sure you set the SACL to propagate to its sub-keys.

explanation: >
    The query collects the events indicating modification of settings for the Bot Detection.
    When the response body contains "policy", "passwordless_policy", or "password_reset_policy" set to "off",
    this indicates that a protection is turned off for the respective flow, i.e. password login, passwordless login, or password reset.
    The Splunk query provides details about IPs, where the change was done from, and values for the listed policies.

    | stats by _time, data.ip, pwd_login_signup, pwdless_login_signup, password_reset
comments:
    - The Splunk query above shall be tuned to reflect a valid tenant name.
    - Limit the detection to actions conducted from not white-listed IPs and/or particular users.
    - A possible extension of this detection is to monitor if CAPTCHA changes from, e.g. Auth Challenge,
      to a simple one degradating the strength of protection.
    - Additionally, you can use this detection for reporting of all changes of the bot detection
      settings by removing the "where" and "head" clauses.
tenant_logs: |
    type:"sapi" AND description: "Create or update the anomaly detection captcha"
prevention:
    - Control tenant admins, i.e. "Admin", as this role has permissions to modify any application.
    - Enforce MFA for tenant admins to reduce the risk of an adversary gaining access.
    - Control Management API scopes that allow modification of attack protection features - update:attack_protection.
    - Control usage of Management API from only trusted IPs by applying Network ACL scoped to "management".
falsepositives:
    - Legitimate updates by an administrator. This rule is designed for threat hunting and to be a starting point for further investigation.

An attacker may have attempted to modify CloudTrail log settings for anti-forensics but it was denied due to a lack of permissions. An attacker can use the update-trail command to disable multi-region logging, so their attacks do not get logged to the other regions. Ex: aws cloudtrail update-trail --name [my-trail] --no-is-multi-region-trail --no-include-global-service-events The attacker may also modify the settings so that the logs get encrypted with a key the attacker only has to prevent reading of the logs. The attacker may also redirect the logs to a S3 bucket they control.

Known False Positives

explanation: >
    This detection monitors Management API (sapi) calls to capture a real-time snapshot of the effective scopes accessible by an application.
    This process allows security teams to identify applications with over-privileged access.
    The rule explicitly excludes monitoring the Auth0 Dashboard (identified by its Global Client ID) as it is inherently granted all sensitive Management API scopes for administrative purposes.
    The accompanying Splunk query offers two options for identifying high-risk applications:
    **Option 1**: Triggers an alert when the total count of granted scopes exceeds a defined threshold ({threshold_for_max_number_of_scopes}).
    This flags applications with overly broad permissions.
    **Option 2**: Reports any application found to have at least one scope from a list of highly sensitive or critical scopes ({list_of_monitored_scopes}).
splunk: |
    index=auth0 data.tenant_name="{your-tenant-name}"

    ``` Exclude the client that corresponds to the Auth0 dashboard (Global Client ID) ```
    NOT data.client_id = {global_client_id} ``` Settings --> Advanced --> scroll to "Global Client Information" ```
    ``` Collect scopes reported in log entries ```
    | spath data.details.request.auth.credentials.scopes{}
    | rename data.details.request.auth.credentials.scopes{} as accessible_scopes
    | fields accessible_scopes data.client_id data.description
    | where isNotNull(accessible_scopes)
    ``` Option 1 - Clients with an excessive number of granted scopes (least privilege violation) ```
    | eval count_scopes = mvcount(accessible_scopes)
    | where count_scopes > {threshold_for_max_number_of_scopes} ``` e.g. 10 ```
    ``` Option 2 - Alert if highly sensitive or critical permissions are found (focus on high-risk actions) ```
    | eval excluded_scopes = {list_of_monitored_scopes} ``` for example, "delete:users,create:users" ```
    | where NOT match(accessible_scopes, replace(excluded_scopes, ",", "|"))
    ``` Print the result ```
    | table data.client_id data.description accessible_scopes count_scopes
comments:
    - The placeholders in the Splunk query —`{your-tenant-name}`, `{global_client_id}`, `{threshold_for_max_number_of_scopes}`,
      and `{list_of_monitored_scopes}`— shall be configured to reflect your valid tenant settings before deployment.
tenant_logs: |
    type: sapi
prevention:
    - Enforce the principle of Least Privilege for all applications accessing the Management API, granting only the minimum necessary scopes.
    - Strictly control and review tenant admin roles, e.g. "Admin", as these roles have permissions to modify applications.
    - Enforce MFA for tenant admins to reduce the risk of an adversary gaining access.
    - Use Auth0 Network ACL feature to limit calls to the Management API, i.e. scope "management", to only trusted, static IP ranges.
    - Minimize or prohibit the use of the most dangerous scopes, e.g., those allowing mass user/client modification/deletion, such as delete:users, update:clients.
falsepositives:
    - Legitimate activity from applications that require broad permissions for valid operational reasons.
    - A request has been generated by the Auth0 dashboard called a Global Client.
github.com/SigmaHQ/sigma
Detects the execution of powershell scripts with calls to the "Start-NetEventSession" cmdlet. Which allows an attacker to start event and packet capture for a network event session. Adversaries may attempt to capture network to gather information over the course of an operation. Data captured via this technique may include user credentials, especially those sent over an insecure, unencrypted protocol.
Known False Positives
  • Legitimate network diagnostic scripts.
Potential Privileged System Service Operation - SeLoadDriverPrivilege
#
Author
Source
github.com/SigmaHQ/sigma
Detects the usage of the 'SeLoadDriverPrivilege' privilege. This privilege is required to load or unload a device driver. With this privilege, the user can dynamically load and unload device drivers or other code in to kernel mode. This user right does not apply to Plug and Play device drivers. If you exclude privileged users/admins and processes, which are allowed to do so, you are maybe left with bad programs trying to load malicious kernel drivers. This will detect Ghost-In-The-Logs (https://github.com/bats3c/Ghost-In-The-Logs) and the usage of Sysinternals and various other tools. So you have to work with a whitelist to find the bad stuff.
Known False Positives
  • Other legimate tools loading drivers. Including but not limited to, Sysinternals, CPU-Z, AVs etc. A baseline needs to be created according to the used products and allowed tools. A good thing to do is to try and exclude users who are allowed to load drivers.
    Detect when a request for authorization provides an unregistered redirect URI, audience, client, unsupported response type, or unsupported challenge type.
    An adversary may try to harvest authorization codes for exchanging them for tokens later, or simply conducting a denial-of-service attack by depleting the rate limit.
explanation: >
    The query collects the failed login request entries and monitors parameters of the authorization request that can be abused.
    These are unregistered or invalid redirect URI, unrecognized audience or client, unsupported response type or challenge type.
    The Splunk query below also provides the malformed values and counts a number of entries for each category.
    It alerts when the count for any of the categories exceeds a specified threshold.
comments:
    - The Splunk query above shall be tuned to reflect a valid tenant name.
    - The values for threshold should be set based on the customer's environment and expected behavior
      that should be close to 0 when all applications are configured correctly.
prevention:
    - Utilize Bot detection to prevent scripted attacks.
    - Onboard a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to prevent malformed requests to prevent injection attacks.
falsepositives:
    - Misconfigured applications building a malformed request to the /authorize endpoint.
